Tuesday, April 23

Woke up by 7:15am. Coffee, egg salad on bread, omega-3, L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine feels like amphetamine for the body (and not for the mind); I should be careful with it.

Train at 8:50am: quite empty, but many people got on the train at 96th. I finished the paper about Pinochet and the rise of human rights discourse. The argument is that the language of human rights bound both left and right, so it became a powerful ideology for its own sake transcending national states, and transforming dozens of countries in the 1980s. Then I read about C++ containers. Turns out new T[3] and new array<T,3> are slightly different: the former is just a pointer which won’t provide further type safety (can assign it to any pointer of another type); so, the latter is preferred.

At the office, everyone from my team seems to be working from home today. But I thought I’d go to the office since I have so many IT issues. They may wanna stop by and talk to me. Otherwise, the office was more lively than usual: many people called, zoomed, and ran discussions by their desks. Seems people don’t use the meeting rooms here. Then people started heading out early, before 3pm.

Still, no email access. They replied it was fixed and closed the ticket. Fixed something in AD; but my email is still not working. I thought I’d wait, maybe something needs to propagate the change. Then Igor called and reopened the ticket himself.

Now I’m responsible for making my life comfy in the office. What will make my life comfy? Good tea selection, gaiwan, cute cup, etc. Oolong, red, and pu’er tea. Snacks? We have no snacks here at all. Pretty notebooks: one wide, and one smaller. That’d be enough for happiness for now.

Then I learned Kotlin. Pretty language. Like Swift or Scala. if returns values like in Scala, unlike Swift. ?. syntax sugar for nullable like in Swift, unlike Scala. Tried to build the project, but it was complaining about the AWS region something. I thought maybe I’ll just wait till Sunny comes back from vacation, or when I get access to the wiki.

I read HN thread about our new throw-away app experiment. “I find the NYC public transit system to be one of the most interesting in the world. Beyond the subways and LIRR and Metro-North (which are covered by the MTA's app), there are literally dozens of other transit providers: Nassau bus, red bus, Suffolk bus, NJT, PATH, HBLR, Roosevelt Island Tram, and a shocking number of smaller targeted transit providers, as well as specialized transit modes like Citibike.” Yum.

Learned that London’s TFL Go app is our major design inspiration.

I went home by 5:30 and pushed myself to go to the gym. Why would I take L-Carnitine, after all? Though I took it in the morning; does it even help at the gym in the evening? I didn't think through my biohacking routines yet.

Watched some of “В Круге Первом” movie before bed. Good movie, based on Solzhenitsyn’s novel. From Russia in 2006. How strange when I lived in Russia in 2006 I didn’t know about any good movies being made at the time. The same about today’s movies: hard to see what will be considered “good” in 20 years. MUBI is good. But those are too good to watch tired before bed.

Biohacking start

It started a few weeks ago, then I thought I'll give it a more extensive try. A few weeks ago I was looking for something calming and helping me sleep, occasionally. I ended up getting Gaba. Combining it with Melatonin is quite powerful: I get very sleepy in about one hour after taking 750mg Gaba and 5mg Melatonin. Melatonin alone is too weak for me; especially, if I don't force myself to lie down and not pick up my phone I miss the short window and do not sleep at all; I even had insomnia after taking Melatonin. So, Gaba + Melatonin seems like a great match.

Other items on the stack:

  • Omega-3: that is safe and has no particular reason to take; seems like the essential component of any biohacking stack. I'll give it a try taking daily 1g with breakfast and 1g with dinner daily.
  • L-Carnitine: it's advertised as for losing weight (which I don't need), but people say it's also good for morning energy in general. I wanna give it a try and combine with exercise, and biking more this spring. I'll try 1g with breakfast daily.
  • Caffeine: I've been drinking coffee for many years, one in the morning and one after lunch, occasionally a third. It seems like a trend now: many people get off coffee these days and say they like it. I still don't believe them, but I want to try. Michael Pollan on Rogan's show says some interesting things about getting off caffeine for a few months: to realize how powerful the drug is. Anyway, I'm thinking of reducing it to one cup in the morning.
  • L-Theanine: taking it occasionally with a second coffee, if I need to drink a second coffee, occasionally
  • Gaba+Melatonin: when I need a good sleep, but feel overly excited in the evening, occasionally.

I will see how it goes.
