I don't have enough vocabulary to understand spoken Chinese, but yeah, I do hear the words and phrases that I know, and it gives me an idea about the topic of conversation. The tones are not too bad: I definitely hear the difference; it's harder for me to name the tones, especially I tend to confuse the 2nd and the 4th tones, and the hardest for me is to remember the difference in tones when I speak myself.
