I think the hippies were rather misunderstood – people wanted to see a great socio-political movement in it, but on the ground, it was a self-destructive mess. Didion wrote good accounts of it in Slouching Towards Bethlehem. The mess was slowly moving towards its religious roots, backward from what many claimed it to be. But that's my humble interpretation. Soviet hippies were, of course, totally different animals.
